Tajikistan was always my whole world, yet I somehow never truly saw it until I decided to leave it — briefly.

At twenty-two, I moved abroad to study journalism. It was only when fellow students asked me to describe home that I realized how little I had articulated what made Tajikistan extraordinary. I drove the legendary Pamir Highway in a shared Land Cruiser. I hiked to the Iskanderkul lake at dusk when the water turns the colour of hammered copper. I spent a week in Khujand documenting the bazaars and the fortress walls that still carry the memory of Alexander the Great's northern campaigns.

Each trip taught me something new about the act of travel itself. Real discovery is slow. It requires sitting in shared minibuses and accepting tea from strangers. It means getting the name of a village wrong and laughing about it with a local who corrects you. It means arriving late, missing the light, and finding something even better in the dark.
