From the Streets of Dushanbe
to the Roof of the World

I grew up in Dushanbe, the capital city nestled between the Hissar Mountain Range and the Varzob River. My childhood was full of contradictions — the chaotic warmth of a post-Soviet city reinventing itself, the scent of fresh non bread at sunrise, afternoons spent in chaikhanas listening to elders retell the epics of Rudaki and Firdausi. Tajikistan was always my whole world, yet I somehow never truly saw it until I decided to leave it — briefly.

At twenty-two, I moved abroad to study journalism. It was only when fellow students asked me to describe home that I realized how little I had articulated what made Tajikistan extraordinary. The Pamirs. The Silk Road ruins. The turquoise lakes of the Wakhan Corridor. The saffron fields near Istaravshan. I had grown up surrounded by genuine wonder and had taken all of it for granted.

I came back with a camera, a worn notebook, and a question: What is it actually like to travel through this country? Not through the lens of a foreign expedition, but honestly, on the ground, in conversation with the people who live here.

Over the following four years I journeyed through all nine of Tajikistan's provinces — from the flat cotton plains of Khatlon in the south to the glaciated silence of Gorno-Badakhshan in the east. I drove the legendary Pamir Highway in a shared Land Cruiser. I hiked to the Iskanderkul lake at dusk when the water turns the colour of hammered copper. I spent a week in Khujand documenting the bazaars and the fortress walls that still carry the memory of Alexander the Great's northern campaigns.

Each trip taught me something new about the act of travel itself. Real discovery is slow. It requires sitting in shared minibuses and accepting tea from strangers. It means getting the name of a village wrong and laughing about it with a local who corrects you. It means arriving late, missing the light, and finding something even better in the dark.

My travel philosophy is simple: go to understand, not to consume. Tajikistan is not a backdrop for adventure tourism — it is a living civilization with a literary tradition stretching back over a thousand years, communities navigating profound change, and landscapes that demand your full presence. I document all of this with that belief at the center.

This blog exists to help you plan a trip that is meaningful, not just memorable. You'll find honest route guides with real logistics — which roads are seasonal, which guesthouses are run by local families, where to hire community-based guides who reinvest in their villages. You'll also find cultural context: the history, the poetry, the etiquette that will make your hosts feel respected and make your experience genuinely rich.

Whether you are a first-time visitor curious about visas, or a seasoned explorer planning a multi-week Pamir traverse, I want madinahonhasanova to be the resource I wish I'd had when I started looking at my own homeland through new eyes.
